A Case Study on Insomnia

Mrs. NA, a 44-year-old female, came to us with complaints of disturbed sleep, stress, premature greying of hair, and mood swings for the past three years. She was able to sleep for only 4–5 hours daily despite being on allopathic medication for the same. She also had irregular food timings for the past one year.

Following the death of her first baby, she was diagnosed with OCD and PTSD. She underwent a 16-day treatment program at Sitaram Mountain Retreat, where she experienced remarkable improvement.

A 16-Day Treatment Plan

Treatment was started with Abhyangam, a full-body oil massage given to calm the nervous system, reduce stress, improve circulation, and prepare the body for further therapies. This was followed by Podikizhi, a herbal powder bolus therapy used to relieve muscular stiffness, improve circulation, and help balance aggravated Vata and Kapha. Siroksheeradhara was then administered to nourish the nervous system, calm the mind, reduce stress, and improve sleep quality.

To prepare the body for purification, Snehapanam was performed using Kalyanaka Gritham for three days. This internal oleation helps loosen accumulated doshas and is traditionally indicated in conditions affecting the mind and nervous system. It was followed by Virechanam using Avipathy Choornam to eliminate aggravated Pitta, improve digestion and metabolism, and support mental calmness through detoxification.

Following purification, Matravasthi with Dhanwantharam Mezhukupakam was administered to pacify aggravated Vata, nourish the nervous system, and promote relaxation and sound sleep. This was followed by Erandamooladi Kashaya Vasthi, which further helps balance Vata, supports bowel function, and restores systemic balance after detoxification. Sirodhara was also performed to reduce stress, relax the mind, and improve sleep quality. Along with these therapies, Brahmi Capsule, Deep Sleep Capsule, and Manasamithra Vatakam were prescribed internally to support mental calmness, improve cognitive function, reduce stress and anxiety, and promote restful, uninterrupted sleep.

Changes Seen After 16 Days

At the end of the treatment, Mrs. NA showed remarkable improvement. Her sleep quality improved significantly, and she experienced better clarity of mind. She was able to sleep for more than six hours without any disturbance.
